**** EXPLNATION ****
In the Korean traditional (or Luni-solar) calender, each year has a name
based on sexagenary cycle. The name of a year in a 60-year cycle consists of two
Chinese characters. The first character is from the ordered series of ten characters
indicating celestial stems and the other is from the ordered series of twelve
characters indicating terrestrial branches. The first series repeats 6 times and the
second series repeats 5 times during 60 years. Therefore, the name of each year would
reappear in every 60 years.
The year of 2001 is the year of Sin-Sa. This implies that the year of
2061 will also be the year of Sin-Sa.
Another way to indicate a specific year in ancient period (or earlier
times) of Korea is to mark the years ruled by a king, such as 3rd year of King
Sejong. This method had been used until 1910.
- The first component is a Celestial Stem(ô¸ÊÎ).
